Why travel with us

It is all about experience. The Walking and Climbing Company has been providing adventure trekking climbing and student travel experiences since 1999. Our goal is for you to experience local culture, mountain lifestyle, and nature in a way you couldn't experience otherwise. So we focus on providing this experience in an approach we have carefully designed through years of practice.

Kalsang Sherpa - Co-Director of The Walking and Climbing Company

Kalsang was born in Namche Bazaar, a small village in the Everest region of Nepal, home of the famous climbing Sherpas. He has worked for many years as a climbing Sherpa guide in the Nepal and Tibet Himalayas on numerous treks and expeditions and set up The Walking and Climbing Company with Susie Sherpa Baer in 1999.

Since then, their range of adventure holidays has widened as demand has increased, enabling others to see and experience the truly astounding Himalayan mountain range and to share Kalsang's passion for the region in which he grew up.

"It was only when we were on the trek itself that I realised just how much there must be involved in putting together an event like this. Once more, my deep thanks for all your work and for keeping me on target to do the trek. It has been one of the great experiences of my life and has left me with many great memories and images.

Our Sherpa guides looked after us completely; as you told us they would, ensuring that we had everything we needed and that we had a great time. Kalsang organised everything superbly from our arrival to our departure. Nuru was an excellent Sirdar throughout and couldn't do enough for us. The other Sherpas that travelled with us throughout the two week trek were wonderful people and again, the level of support they offered was amazing.

The mountains were stunning and we were blessed with incredible weather throughout. The trek itself was incredibly challenging at times and through those challenges I have learned a lot of valuable things about myself. It has all had a deep effect on me and I have spent much of the time since I got back thinking about the experiences and reflecting what I have learned"

Susie Sherpa-Baer - Co-Director of The Walking and Climbing Company

Susie worked in education for 22 years then started climbing and trekking in 1996. She set up The Walking and Climbing Company with Kalsang Sherpa in 1999. Having climbed a number of mountains in Nepal and Tibet and trekked in many regions of the Himalayas, she has an excellent understanding of the support and preparation necessary for participating in adventure travel.

Susie runs the UK office liaising with individuals and organisations travelling with the company. She is an assessor for the Duke of Edinburgh's Award and travels regularly with groups to the mountains of Nepal, Tibet and Bhutan.

High Staffing Levels

Why is this Important?

  • Altitude sickness can affect even the most physically fit person.

  • If you needed to go down to a lower altitude or go at a different pace to the rest of the group, then higher staffing levels allows this. It means you are taken care of and also doesn't mean the whole group have to go down if someone is unwell.

  • Mountains are a challenging place so higher staffing levels increases the success as well as the quality of care for each individual.

Highly Qualified and Experienced Staff

Every trip is either lead by one of the company directors - Kalsang Sherpa or another of his highly experienced and qualified leaders, such as Tendi Sherpa.

Kalsang Sherpa is an enormously experienced guide, having climbed for many years with groups on Everest, Lhotse, Ama Dablam, Manaslu and Annapurna. This ensures that every trip from treks to expeditions is prepared with care and deep knowledge at its core to make sure you have the best experience possible

Tendi Sherpa, who leads the expeditions, was born in the village of Khembalung, a mountainous region of Sankhuwasabha District of Nepal. He started his trekking and mountaineering career when he was just 13 years old. Now, he is an IFMGA/UIAGM Certified Mountain Guide with 11 successful summits of Mt. Everest and years of mountaineering and trekking experiences in the Himalaya, Europe (Alps), South America (Andes) and China. In addition, he is also a high altitude rescue professional.

Highly Personalised Experience

Why is this important?

Adventure travel is all about experiences. Therefore, travelling with smaller groups opens a lot more possibilities for a more personal and in depth experience where a wonderful bond can be created within the group.

No Hidden Costs

Why is this important?

Some companies are not transparent and sell their adventure travel trips for a much cheaper price. However, there is always a catch to it. Look for the hidden costs that will emerge such as essential food and equipment, hotel cost, airport transfers, insurance, permits, guide to client ratio, lack of porters, etc. Our goal is to be up front and transparent so you can focus on the experience and leave all the planning to us.

Previous feedback from trips

"Quite simply, if you are planning a trip to Nepal, Tibet or Bhutan, book through the Walking and Climbing Company. I can't recommend Susie and Kalsang highly enough for the planning of my trip, value for money, and being well looked after with impeccable customer support from initial contact to getting on the plane back home from Nepal (March / April 2016).

The trip was amazing ? a few days in the most relaxing part of Kathmandu (Boudhanath) a long journey up to Everest region for 10 days trekking, and then back to Boudhanath.

My guide Kanchha was there to meet me at the airport and then looked after me in a way I simply cannot fault until dropping me back off at the airport at the end of my trip. He had amazing knowledge of the mountains, kept me 100% safe at all times, and I was shown the most amazing hospitality throughout my trip of a lifetime. 10 out of 10."

"Susie and Kalsang Sherpa Baer made the impossible possible for me! I've never had the confidence to do a trek in the Himalayas because of various limitations to my physical abilities and the solution was to do the trek to the beautiful Gosain Kunda Lakes in the Langtang Region of Nepal on Horseback!! What an amazing experience I've shared and the care and attention to the details so that I succeeded in my goal excelled all my expectations - the support in my preparation beforehand and then the encouragement whilst there was kind, informative and professional. Any one who dreams of doing a trek and lacks the confidence to give it a go, should use The Walking and Climbing Company. With heartfelt thanks for a life affirming experience"
